We are Liz and Stephen Thomson, originally from Scotland. In 2005 we moved to Spain, where we’ve been building our dream ever since.
We were no longer happy with our lives in the UK and we found ourselves longing for a change. Stephen was working in London, while I stayed at home in Scotland with our two small children. We only saw each other for a few days each month. It felt like we were just going through the motions, existing rather than truly living.
We knew we wanted something different, something better for our family. So, in October 2005, we made the bold decision to move to Spain and this move was our chance to build the life we longed for.
After spending three months exploring different areas of Andalucia, we stumbled across a beautiful spot in inland Granada. It had everything we were searching for: peace, tranquility, a slower pace of life, and a safe, friendly environment where our boys could grow up.
After a lot of searching, we found what would become our home for the next 10 years. It was a huge project—no toilet, no kitchen, no running water. People told us we were either brave or crazy to take on such a mammoth renovation, but for us, it was an exciting adventure. With Stephen’s skills, knowledge and a lot of hard work, we slowly began transforming it into the home we had always envisioned.
Now, nearly 20 years later, we have finally finished!
